Spanish DJ and producer Jay Nortown lends his skills to release #153 on Lucidflow, with the last five years spent living in Ibiza lending to some sun soaked house grooves on the ‘Satellites’ EP.
Opening track ‘Makemake’ brings a new aesthetic to the label, embracing the trend for lofi sounds thanks to a hefty spread of crunchy vinyl crackle throughout the track. Punching through this is the easily recognisable sprightly tone of the 909 and bouncing multi-textured chords.
Following this is ‘Namaka’, which dispenses with the dusty vibes and swaps in an ‘after the rain’ mood, perfect for those afternoons where the switch between bright sun and doomy clouds seems to happen at will. Again its key motif is multi-textured and layered chords, which appear front and centre before pinging around your ears left and right.
Finally ‘Haumea’ is a classic piece of driving deep house that will have Guidance Recordings and Paper Recordings aficionados from the past nod their head in approval. Like the best material from that era, it is no less dance floor focused than its straight up house based brethren. However its deep alignment certainly aims to enrich soul and not just body alone.
Label owners Klartraum pick up ‘Namaka’ for a remix. It looks across to ‘Makemake’ for inspiration by borrowing its vinyl crackle, kicking off with a eighties edged synth solo. While you think you are in for a pared back journey, the remix keeps unfolding and unfolding and unfolding. Subtle breaks are introduced and layered, orchestral tendencies and embraced in little moody movements, these in turn develop into brighter passages. There are no rules being followed here on this live jam journey.
Jay Nortown ‘Satellites’ will be available on May 21st 2018 from the usual digital stockists.
